Robert W. Sowers [Cumberland]

CUMBERLAND — Robert Wade Sowers, 73, of Cumberland, died Wednesday, Feb. 17, 2010, at his residence.

Born April 29, 1936, in Cumberland, he was the son of the late Calvin Wade Sowers and Ethel K. (Ketterman) Grapes. He was also preceded in death by his foster parents, Forrest and Thelma Morris; one brother, Kenneth Sowers; and one sister, Phyllis (Sowers) Smith; and two foster brothers, Forrest “Sonny” Morris and Richard Morris.

Robert retired from the Kelly-Springfield Tire Company as an over the road truck driver. He and his wife enjoyed traveling to see their children and grandchildren. He en-joyed shoveling snow with his “snow buddies,” neighbors, Donald and Betty.

He was a member of the Emmanuel-Bethel United Methodist Church. He served in the U.S. Army and U.S. Marines. He was also a member of the Kemp Lodge 154 A.F. & A.M., Mount Savage, the Scottish Rite of Freemasonry 32 degree and the Order of the Eastern Star Mountain Chapter 015.

Surviving are three daughters, Lori Sites and husband Blake, Wiley Ford, W.Va., Susan Rix and husband Daniel “Danny,” Cumberland, Stacey Smith and husband Marcus Smith, Ladson, S.C.; one son, Gregory Sowers, Humble, Texas; one special daughter, Sherry Montgomery and husband Robert; 12 grandchildren, Blake Sites, Garrett Sites and wife LaToya Aaron Sites, Joshua Barnhart, Tyler “Jake” Barnhart, Keri Barnhart, Nicole Rix, Ayden Sowers, Zoe Sowers, Asha Sowers, Alexander Wollan, Briana Smith and Chloe “Fuss” Smith; one great-granddaughter, Violet Sioux Cardenas; four brothers, William Sowers, Ronald Sowers, DeWayne Sowers and James Grapes; three sisters, Bonnie Judy, Linda Mumma and Sharon Grapes; and his foster family, Norita Morris, Thelma Jean Mathews, Raymond Morris, Stanley Morris and David Morris.

Friends will be received at the Scarpelli Funeral Home, P.A., 108 Virginia Ave., Cumberland, (scarpellifuneralhomes.com) on Saturday from 7 to 9 p.m. The Kemp Lodge 154 A.F. & A.M. will hold a memorial service on Saturday at 7:30 p.m.

Funeral services will be conducted at the funeral home on Sunday at 2 p.m. with the Rev. Michael Nau officiating.

Interment will be in Sunset Memorial Park.

Military honors will be accorded by Post 13 Veterans Honor Guard.
