Petersburg will host multimedia exhibit

PETERSBURG, W.Va. — New Harmonies: Celebrating American Roots Music, a multimedia exhibit for children and adults, will be on display at the Landes Arts Centre, 18 Mountain View St., from Dec. 4 through Jan. 24.

Hours for the exhibit, which is open to the public free of charge, are Monday, Tuesday, Thursday and Friday from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m., Wednesday 9 a.m. to 8 p.m. and Saturday 9 a.m. to noon.

Beginning on Dec. 7, also at the Landes Arts Center and during the same hours, will be a multimedia exhibit of Grant, Pendleton and Mineral counties musicians recorded by folklorist Bill Wellington in 1978 and ’79. That exhibit also is open to the public at no cost.

Wellington will give a public program on the eight musicians he recorded on Dec. 8 at 7:30 p.m., also at the arts center. A reception will follow the presentation, which is open to the public free of charge.

New Harmonies is part of Museum on Main Street, a collaboration between the Smithsonian Insitution and the Federation of State Humanities Councils. Support for the exhibit has been provided by the U.S. Congress. The state sponsor is the West Virginia Humanities Council, with local sponsorship by the Grant County Arts Council Inc.

Sponsors of Wellington’s public performance and exhibit are the Grant County Arts Council Inc. and community sponsor Geary and Geary, LC. The Wellington exhibit and program are presented with financial assistance from the West Virginia Division of Culture and History and the National Endowment for the Arts, with approval from the West Virginia Commission on the Arts.
