FROSTBURG — The Frostburg State University Programming Council will present its international film series, “Bridges to the World,” which brings views of unique cultures from around the world to the campus of FSU.
The series will begin on Feb. 9 and run every Tuesday until March 9. All show times are at 7 p.m. in Tawes Hall 153.
The month-long series will begin Feb. 9 with a film from Russia. “The Island” is a biographical film about a 20th century Eastern Orthodox monk. The film offers a moving parable about sin, faith, prayer, forgiveness and redemption played out in a remote monastery on the shores of the White Sea.
The second film of the series, on Feb. 16, showcases a romantic comedy from Korea. “My Dear Enemy” follows a slightly absurd day in the life of Hee-soo and Byoung-woon, ex-lovers who reunite for financial reasons. Like most romantic comedies, the two could not be more different. She is desperate, terse, suspicious and angry; he is carefree, talkative, charming and happy. Fortunately, the film avoids a clichéd romantic trajectory and instead focuses on the effect the two ex-lovers have on each other.
The third film of the series, on Feb. 23, comes from Argentina. “El Hijo de la Novia” or “Son of the Bride” is an intimate, sentimental film about family expectations, obligations and love. The rather serious topics are well-balanced with humor and laughter.
The fourth film of the series is from Estonia, debuting on March 2. “Detsembrikuumus” or “December Heat” is Estonia’s official submission to the Academy Awards Foreign Language Film category for 2010. This historical action-drama was produced for the 90th anniversary of the Republic of Estonia, and tells the story of the attempted communist coup.
The film follows a young soldier and his wife as they struggle to save their lives and their country’s. Along the way they receive help from legendary Gen. Ernst Rodder, and together they battle the new Estonia bureaucracy and the communists to determine whether their country remains independent or becomes a satellite of the Soviet Union.
The series will end with a film from Nigeria on March 9. “Royal Messengers” is a Nollywood (Nigerian film industry) comedy that features the very popular team of Osita Iheme and Chinedu Ikedieze. The movie tells a story of King Igwe who has 21 daughters, but no son to take his place as king – or so he thought.
He discovers that he may have a son living in Lagos but only has 30 days to find him. His journey begins as he searches for a son that he knows nothing about.

‘Pirates Ahoy’ to set sail in Frostburg
