FROSTBURG — In the midst of a very active year for the Frostburg State University chapter of The Wildlife Society, the group recently won first place at the 2012 Northeast Wildlife Conclave at the Laurelville Mennonite Church Center in Mount Pleasant, Pa.
The FSU chapter also attended the 2012 Southeast Wildlife Conclave at Fall Creek Falls State Park in Pikeville, Tenn., and the Maryland-Delaware state chapter of The Wildlife Society Spring Meeting at Redden State Forest, Del.
Along with their first place standing, 13 FSU students participated in various individual and team competitions at the Northeast Wildlife Conclave.
The FSU quiz bowl team placed first, which included Ryan Steiner, Matt Tillett, Jesse Voigt, Judy Broadwater and alternate Sean Knox. Voigt won first place in archery. Tillett won first place in photography and second place in game bird wing identification. Christine Thurber placed third in photography and Steiner came in first place in game bird wing identification.
Participating universities included Penn State University, University of Connecticut, University of Massachusetts, University of Maine and others.
At the Southeast Wildlife Conclave, 21 FSU students participated in various individual and team competitions and placed 13 out of 24 universities. Voigt placed second in the cervid-calling and turkey-calling competitions. Katie Zembower received second place for her color photography. Steiner won second place in the free-form art contest. Chris Cochran won third place in the goose-calling competition. Broadwater placed third in the black-and-white photography contest.
At the Maryland-Delaware state chapter of The Wildlife Society Spring Meeting, Jeff Curry and Sara Rothamel presented research posters. Rothamel won first place in the graduate poster session with her poster “Territoriality and Breeding Behavior of Cerulean Warbler Assemblages in Western Maryland.”
The FSU chapter of The Wildlife Society attends meetings throughout the year and participates in arboretum and trail clean-ups. They encourage community participation in the chapter through Focus the Future, Focus Frostburg, the Frostburg Block Party and Appalachian Festival.
The chapter participates in activities, including the Conservation Leaders for Tomorrow program, the Wildlife Habitat Council and more. The members also attend presentations by guest speakers, who are able to provide information about what to do with the degrees they are pursuing.

Students named to Frostburg State University's fall dean's list
FROSTBURG — The following students from the area have been named to the dean’s list at Frostburg State University in recognition of outstanding academic achievement for the fall 2012 semester. To be eligible, a student must undertake a minimum of 12 credit hours and earn a cumulative semester grade point average of at least 3.4 on a 4.0 scale.

Eastern West Virginia Community and Technical College confers 104 diplomas
MOOREFIELD, W.Va. — Ninety individual graduates reaped the rewards of their months and years of college study at Eastern West Virginia Community and Technical College’s third annual commencement May 5. Held at the Moorefield Middle School for spring 2012 and fall 2011 graduates the ceremony conferred a record 104 diplomas total.
Keynote speaker Michael Simmons suggested that at this “pivot point in life,” the graduates should decide between a “path of certainty,” and “a path of faith.” -
