Allegany High event canceled to prevent ‘dirty dancing’

— CUMBERLAND — Sydney Wilson saw the dirty dancing at Allegany High School’s homecoming dance last fall — the kind of dancing that caused the county-wide student government group to ban it at all area high schools last year.

“People were, like, grinding each other,” said Wilson, a freshman, who saw one couple get kicked out of Allegany’s November dance.

“The girls were in front of their boyfriends, like, bent over at an angle, and they were, like, rubbing up against each other,” Wilson said.

That night, teachers warned students to stop the provocative dancing, Wilson said. So did parent chaperones.

Nothing seemed to work.

So AHS Principal Mike Calhoun found a way to guarantee that dirty dancing won’t take place at the school’s next scheduled dance, the annual Sweetheart Dance, in February.

He canceled it.
