Quote from Bible isn’t quite what he claimed it was

Lies bother me and sometimes a response is necessary. In Jeffrey Davis’ Reader Commentary of Nov. 19 (“Voters recognized civil rights of all citizens”), a blatant untruth cannot be left unaddressed.

Mr. Davis says a neighbor displays Bible quotes on the post of his mailbox, an idea which I like very much and one that is akin to the Bible Digest on this page of the Cumberland Times-News.

However, one of the current postings, “Abhor those who are evil,” is not a Bible quote from Romans 12:9, nor can it be, since that statement is the very antithesis of Jesus’ teaching.

In Matthew’s Gospel 5:43 and 44, Jesus says, “You have heard that it has been said, You shall love your neighbor, and hate your enemy. But I say unto you, Love your enemies, bless them that curse you, do good to them that hate you, and pray for them which despitefully use you and persecute you.”

The true quote from Romans 12:9 is “Abhor that which is evil,” not “those who are evil.” The application being that we are to love the sinner but hate the sin.

Taking Mr. Davis at his word that such falsehood is blatantly placed in public (possibly for him personally to see), it’s no wonder he is antichristian. However, his statement, “fundamentalist Christians rant against homosexuals,” needs to have the word “some” preceding it, because without a modifier that statement is a lie.

As for “Satanic verses found in the Bible,” that is another lie, since, “All scripture is given by inspiration of God (II Timothy 3:16).

Some verses have been poorly translated and some definitions have changed over time, like the words “cleve,” “marriage,” and “evil.” But the Bible is still chock-full of God’s truth, good news for all men; at least, “available” to all men.
