Local firefighters who responded to two recent trailers fire just south of Ridgeley, W.Va., on Route 28 shortly after midnight on Jan. 1 and the afternoon of Feb. 17 should be mentioned and commended.
In addition to the Ridgeley Volunteer Fire Department, other companies responding to one or both fires were Bedford Road, Bowling Green, Corriganville, Cresaptown, Frostburg, Shaft, Short Gap and Wiley Ford VFDs and the Cumberland Fire Department. Ridgeley Police, Mineral County deputy sheriffs and West Virginia State Police also were involved.
Fortunately, no one was injured during either fire, but these old trailers are in a wooded area and easily could have set Knobley Mountain and/or flood control levee ablaze and threatened the entire town of Ridgeley.
While the weather was cold, luckily winds were light during both fires — known to gust over 40 mph at this time of the year.
Thanks to all of our dedicated professional and volunteer first-responders who help to make the tri-state area a safer place to live. Neighbors I have spoken to concur in these statements.

Outrageous
Distrust of government secrecy has been elevated to an exceptional level with the disclosure the Justice Department covertly examined two months of Associated Press phone records to determine who leaked details to the AP about a foiled terrorist plot.
This amounts to spying on an American news organization — common practice in dictatorships but scary conduct in a democratic system that prizes the public value of an independent watchdog press. -
