The wicked snow that has been blasting our region is more than inconvenient — it is potentially dangerous.
So all of us would do well to heed the following advice from the Allegany County Emergency Management Division, especially given the forecast for another winter storm today and Wednesday:
• Stay informed about weather broadcasts for any changes to the forecast.
• Dress properly in several layers of loose-fitting clothing with hats and gloves.
• If the heat goes out, use only devices that are approved for heating indoors and follow all safety precautions.
• Never leave burning candles unattended.
• Be careful while snow shoveling or pushing a vehicle; these activities can cause a heart attack in older or less physically fit people.
• If at all possible, avoid driving.
• If you must go out, inform family or friends of your plans.
• Keep your vehicle gas tank full and fill up with washer fluid.
• Carry an emergency preparedness kit in your vehicle. It should include blankets, clothing, water, food, flashlight with extra batteries, shovel, kitty litter or sand for traction, jumper cables, etc.
• If you become stranded in your vehicle, make sure the exhaust pipe is clear and run the engine for 10-minute intervals for heat. Leave the windows open slightly to avoid carbon monoxide poisoning. Tie a bright cloth to the antenna or door and brush snow away so the vehicle is visible.
• Carry a cell phone and be sure to keep the battery charged.
