Traffic group

Few people attend, but its work is vital to the city

Only three people have appeared before the Cumberland City Traffic Group in the past six months, and the possibility exists that the panel may discontinue its meetings.

The group considers matters of considerable importance, and although it has no authority, its recommendations generally are accepted by the Mayor and City Council.

Recently, the group was asked to create a crosswalk at the intersection of Greene and Lee Streets. Traffic is heavy there, and new traffic signals may have to be installed.

Its discussion of moving a little-used parking kiosk from the first block of Washington Street to South Centre Street is receiving good comments.

The group is composed of representatives from the engineering, police and street departments, and it has considered numerous items of late. Among these are creation of park-and-ride locations, speeding and parking complaints and traffic backups at different locations in the city and a review of at least one traffic signal’s timing.

Although the city says it will still accept the public’s concerns about traffic problems, we urge it to continue regular meetings of the group.

Even though few members of the public appear before it, the board’s work continues to be vital. The recommendations it makes have had a significant impact on the way traffic moves about the city.

School is boring but we all have to go, so choose your school carefully. I attend a Christian school because I don’t have to listen to people cussing, teachers and some class mates are caring, and I’m learning about Christ.
