Casting a vote on Election Day is not only a privilege and a right — it is a duty that none of us should take lightly.
Choosing a president for the next four years is an onerous responsibility. Additionally, the various state ballots feature a list of candidates for state and local offices. Most, like Maryland this year, also have a number of referendum items to be decided.
Not in recent memory have Marylanders been confronted with so many controversial and important referendum decisions. Free state voters will decide on in-state college tuition for some undocumented immigrants (the DREAM Act), same-sex marriage, gaming expansion and the boundaries for Congressional districts. There also three constitutional amendments to be voted on.
Too many times voter turnout in Maryland and across the nation is a disappointment. With early voting options now offered before Election Day, absentee ballot availability and lengthy polling hours on Election Day itself, registered voters have scant excuse for not casting a ballot.
Maryland and Pennsylvania polling places will be open from 7 a.m. to 8 p.m. West Virginia polling hours are 6:30 a.m. to 7:30 p.m.
Vote today — your ballot really does count.

Outrageous
Distrust of government secrecy has been elevated to an exceptional level with the disclosure the Justice Department covertly examined two months of Associated Press phone records to determine who leaked details to the AP about a foiled terrorist plot.
This amounts to spying on an American news organization — common practice in dictatorships but scary conduct in a democratic system that prizes the public value of an independent watchdog press. -
Prevention

Better fix it
The West Virginia Division of Highways should not give up on improving safety at the intersection of U.S. Route 220 and Stoney Run Road in Keyser merely because the intersection does not meet the state’s criteria for a traffic signal.

That many?
Only about one in every four people trust the federal government, according to a recent Pew Research survey.
We’re surprised that number isn’t close to zero. -

I have three words I want to say: “It is time.”
By those three words, I am referring to passage of the Equal Rights Amendment (ERA). -
