Triple threat

Frostburg triplets Matthew Mannick, Dylan Mannick and Seth Mannick will be among the participants in the 32nd annual Fourth of July soapbox car derby at Frostburg. Matthew is being sponsored by the Ladies of the Elks, Dylan by Frostburg Eagles and Seth by the Bowery Street Pub.

    Fifteen-year-old Julia Robinson, right, from Flintstone is tought the art of sketching with color pencils by Donna Housel Tuesday at Café Mark in Town Centre as she sketches a lynx. Robison has been taking lessons from Housel for more than four years to develop skills she has as an artist. Art lessons are given every Tuesday with colored pencils at the café from 1 to 4:30 p.m.

  • Ice rink A hearty lot takes to the ice on winter day

    Area residents took advantage of the cold weather the area is experiencing by ice skating at Canal Place on Sunday. Some of the skaters used to skate at the Riverside YMCA. Last year the Canal Place Preservation & Development Authority resurrected the tradition of ice skating on the C&O Canal. For more information on ice skating on the C&O Canal, contact the National Park Service Visitor Center at (301) 722-8226.

  • GMH again supports Toys for Happiness

    Employees and staff of Grant Memorial Hospital in Petersburg, W.Va., again supported the Petersburg Community Toys for Happiness project with more than 200 items donated to last year’s project. Activity Director Josie Goldizen said she had to add paper cards with the words boy and girl to the Angel Tree several times. “The cards disappeared as fast as I put them on the tree and the gifts just kept coming in,” she said. Donations came from every department of the hospital and physician offices. From the left are Paula Rohrbaugh, Radiology Department; Beth Ann Smith, Housekeeping Department; aides Jess Hinzman and Shandra Dollly, Sherry Taylor with Toys for Happiness, Kim Roth, SW; and Goldizen.

At left: Another group of leadership students volunteered at the Ark of Hope Inc., a no-kill animal rescue shelter near Oldtown. From the left are Kim Willison, Jacob Foreman, Katie Graham, Savanna Weller, Sharon Brimhall, Kristen Roudabush and Bethany Bowman. The students cleaned kennels, played with the animals, and gave them food and water. They hope to encourage others to give toys, blankets and donations to the shelter and/or volunteer to help the Care family, who runs the animal rescue.
