ERIE, Pa. — The Frostburg State softball team was eliminated from the 2009 AMCC Tournament Championship game with a 2-0 loss to host and top seed Penn State Behrend Sunday morning.
With the victory, the Lions (32-6) won the AMCC Title and earned the league’s automatic bid to the NCAA Tournament for the second year in a row.
The Lions scored both runs in the fifth inning off RBIs from Lia Sorce and Katie Whitby. Penn State Behrend starter Emma Hahn also took care of business on the mound, fanning 10 and allowing just two hits to earn the win.
Senior Kaitlyn Wagner and junior Samantha Quirin each had a hit for the Bobcats (26-17). Freshman starter Megan Magee struck out two and allowed two runs.
This is the second-straight season that Penn State Behrend has defeated FSU in the conference championship game and earned the league’s automatic bid to the NCAA Tournament. Last spring, Frostburg State was eliminated by Behrend 2-0 and 9-1.
The Bobcats now await a possible bid to ECAC Tournament.
On Saturday the Bobcats made an improbable run through the losers bracket by sweeping a tripleheader to reach the championship for the second year in a row.
FSU started it off with a 3-1 victory over fourth seed Pitt-Greensburg. FSU was paced by freshman Brooke Speake whose two triples accounted for all three runs as she had an RBI in the second inning and two RBIs in the fourth.
Junior Katelyn Coffey tossed a complete-game victory and evened her record to 10-10.
Leading hitter Brooke Tapman was 3-for-4.
The Bobcats got revenge against No. 3 Medaille (20-18) with a 5-2 victory in the second game. Medaille beat the Bobcats 1-0 in the opening game of the tournament.
On the mound, it was a rematch between FSU’s freshman ace Megan Magee and the Mavericks’ Amanda Westling. This time the roles were reversed as each pitcher went the distance, but Magee held the upper hand by allowing three hits while FSU touched Westling for 11.
Tapman and junior Lindsay Freitag provided the power for FSU giving the Bobcats a 5-0 advantage through six innings. Freitag scored on a Tapman sacrifice fly in the third and drove home RBIs in the fourth and sixth innings.
Tapman made her mark in the sixth inning with a two-run home run. Kaitlyn Wagner and Jamie Miller each reached on singles earlier in the inning.
Medaille struck for two runs late in the sixth, but Magee retired the Mavericks in order in the seventh.
Freitag and Wagner provided an excellent one-two punch at the top of the batting order as each finished 3-for-4.
Despite being outhit (6-5), Frostburg State shut out No. 2 Mt. Aloysius (27-12) 3-0.
Tapman hit a two-out triple and scored on a Victoria Krichbaum single in the first inning.
Magee kept the Mounties at bay by scattering five hits through five innings, while Frostburg State added two insurance runs in the sixth inning. Freshman Jenna Delaney scored Tapman with a double and scored on a Samantha Quirin single to make it 3-0.
Tapman finished 5-for-7 on the day with three RBIs and three runs scored.
Frostburg State outhit its opponents 28-17 and outscored them 11-3 in the three victories.
