YOUNGWOOD, Pa. — Potomac State dominated Beaver County in the first game and upset top-seeded Westmoreland in the second game to advance to the finals of the Western Pennsylvania Collegiate Conference softball tournament.
Morgan Shockey had two singles and five runs batted in as the Catamounts pounded Beaver County 15-1 in five innings. Lisa Barry hit two singles and knocked in two runs, and Kayla Stickel added a double and a single. Kayla Watts and Aaryka Anglin both singled twice with Anglin get two RBIs.
Angling and Rochelle Wolford combined to allow no earned runs and allow just three hits.
Potomac State then took the opportunity to avenge losses to the Wolfpack by getting a shutout from Anglin and a 2-0 win.
Anglin had only one strikeout, but walked only one and kept Westmoreland off-balance to allow just five hits in the shutout.
Taylor Butts finished with a double and a single, and Stickel doubled home on run.
The Catamounts advance to the finals and will face the winner of the losers bracket today at noon. Potomac State (18-10) must lose twice to be eliminated.
FSU wins 2nd game against Medaille
FROSTBURG — Megan Magee fired a nine-inning shutout and Brooke Speake’s ninth-inning grounder drove in the only run, lifting Frostburg State to a 1-0 win over Medaille and a split of their Allegheny Mountain Collegiate Conference doubleheader on Saturday.
Medaille blanked Frostburg in the opener, 2-0.
Magee, a freshman, scattered eight hits and struck out nine in the second-game victory. She improved to 13-2 with her fourth shutout of the year.
The only run came in the top of the ninth. Jayme Miller started the inning on second, moved to third on a groundout and scored on Speake’s grounder to shortstop.
In the opener, Amanda Westling hurled a two-hit shutout and struck out 11 for Medaille. Katelyn Coffey allowed seven hits and just two runs but was tagged with the loss.
FSU (21-10, 10-5) plays at Penn State Behrend for a 1 p.m. doubleheader today.
