Tapman homers three times in FSU’s doubleheader loss

From Staff Reports

FROSTBURG — Frostburg State’s Brooke Tapman had another big day, but it wasn’t quite enough as Mount Aloysius swept the Bobcats 12-8 and 3-2 in their Allegheny Mountain Collegiate Conference doubleheader Thursday afternoon.

Tapman went 4-for-6 with three home runs, three runs scored and five runs batted in for Frostburg State (20-9, 9-4). The sophomore slugger now has 13 home runs on the season.

In the opener, Mount Aloysius (19-8, 9-2) built a 10-0 lead and held on for the victory as the Bobcats, who got to within 11-8, scored eight of the game’s final 10 runs.

The first-game comeback began with back-to-back homers by Tapman and Samantha Quirin in the third. A two-run single by Kaitlyn Wagner got the Bobcats to within 10-7 in the fourth, and another solo homer by Tapman made it 11-8 in the fifth.

Christine Lindsey went 3-for-4 from the No. 9 spot to lead Mount Aloysius. Tapman, Quirin, Lindsay Freitag and Katelyn Coffey had two hits for Frostburg State.

Mount Aloysius won the second game in nine innings, after a Tapman two-out, two-run homer had tied it 2-2 in the eighth.

Scoreless through seven innings, Andie O’Neil singled home a pair of runs for the Mounties in the eighth.

Frostburg State had runners on second and third in its half of the eighth before a double play on a lineout erased the runner at third.

Tapman came through, however, with a two-run homer to tie it 2-2.

Amy Miller scored the game winner from third on a close play at the plate on a ground ball in the top of the ninth.

Frostburg’s Megan Magee (12-2) absorbed the loss despite allowing just one earned run and three hits. She struck out seven.

The Bobcats play at Medaille on Saturday at 1 p.m.
