Frostburg sweeps twinbill

Coffey hurls perfect game, Tapman ties home run record

From Staff Reports

FROSTBURG — Katelyn Coffey tossed a perfect game and Brooke Tapman tied the Frostburg State single-season home run record as the Bobcats swept Penn State Altoona, 10-0 and 9-2, in an Allegheny Mountain Collegiate Conference softball doubleheader Tuesday afternoon.

In the five-inning first game, Coffey fired the second perfect game of her career and had eight strikeouts. Her other perfect game was also against Penn State Altoona, a year ago. She fanned 12 that day in a 7-0 FSU victory.

Frostburg (14-4, 4-0) led 3-0 in the fourth when Tapman tied the school record with her seventh home run of the season, a three-run blast to left-center. The homer puts her just three round-trippers shy of the school’s career record of 15, set by Trish Brown from 2003-2006.

Jayme Miller had an RBI single and Victoria Krichbaum poked a two-run triple to right in the third inning to give Frostburg an early 3-0 lead.

Tapman's three-run homer in the fourth highlighted a seven-run inning. Miller and Coffey scored runs in the inning and Kristen Engels had a two-run single.

In the second contest, Frostburg State rallied from a 2-0 hole with a run in the third and two more in the fifth before a six-run sixth sealed the deal.

Megan Magee (8-1) allowed two earned runs on five hits while striking out four.

Erin Cline hit a two-run homer in the first inning to give the Lions (3-11, 2-4) their only runs of the afternoon.

Tapman drove in FSU’s first run with a sacrifice fly in the third, Krichbaum was hit by a pitch with the bases loaded in the fifth, and Tapman scored on a passed ball later in the inning to give FSU the lead for good, 3-2.

Krichbaum belted a three-run double, Jenna Delaney had an RBI single, Tapman drew a bases-loaded walk and Beth Whitehead scored on an error in the Bobcats’ six-run sixth.

Krichbaum went 3-for-5 with six RBIs on the day for FSU, which plays at Hood in a non-conference game on Thursday at 3 o’clock.
