VIRGINIA BEACH, Va. — Sophomore Brooke Tapman had four hits including a grand slam as Frostburg State earned a split on the final day of the Beach Blast. The Bobcats dropped their first contest Saturday to Virginia Wesleyan, 5-1, but rebounded to cruise past John Jay 17-4.
FSU (2-2) trailed John Jay 1-0 after the first inning but used an eight-run second inning to blow the game open. The Bobcats tacked on two runs in the third, three in the fourth and four in the fifth.
Tapman finished 2-for-4 with a fifth-inning grand slam and five RBI’s. Sophomore Victoria Krichbaum finished 3-for-4 and freshman Kristen Engels was 2-for-2.
Junior pitcher Katelyn Coffey earned the win after allowing six hits and an earned run.
In the first game, Virginia Wesleyan broke open a 1-1 tie with a run in the fourth and three more in the seventh.
Tapman finished with two hits, junior Lindsay Freitag had a hit and scored while senior Kaitlyn Wagner was 1-for-3 with an RBI.
Freshman Megan Magee was victimized by five unearned runs by the Marlins in taking the loss.
Frostburg State faces Suffolk at 11 a.m. in the NTC Spring Games in Clearmont Florida Sunday.
