VIRGINIA BEACH, Va. — Sophomore Victoria Krichbaum posted four hits in two games as the Frostburg State softball team earned a split on the first day of the Beach Blast in Virginia Beach, Va., Friday. The Bobcats dropped their opener to N.C. Wesleyan 3-0 but rebounded later in the day to defeat Wilkes 3-1.
Krichbaum had two of FSU’s five hits in the loss to Wesleyan followed by juniors Samantha Quirin and Katelyn Coffey and sophomore Brooke Tapman each with one.
Coffey also suffered the loss on the mound after allowing three runs, one earned, in six innings while fanning six. The Battling Bishops, which opened the season 1-0 with the win over Frostburg State, plated one run in the first inning and two in the third.
In the second game, FSU (1-1) rallied from a 1-0 deficit with two runs in the fifth and one in the sixth for the victory. Krichbaum again had two hits while FSU totaled seven in the win.
Freshman Megan Magee earned his first collegiate victory after tossing seven innings and allowing an unearned run in the second inning. She also struck out seven and allowed five hits.
With FSU down 1-0, senior Kaitlyn Wagner led off the fifth inning with a double to get things going. Freshman Jenna Delaney tied the game with her first career hit (a single) scored Wagner. Delaney advanced to second on the play and later moved to third on a bunt before scoring the go ahead when sophomore Lindsay Freitag singled.
The Bobcats tacked on a single run in the sixth for a 3-1 lead. Krichbaum doubled to center, advanced to third on a bunt by Coffey and scored on a fielding error on the play.
Delaney and Freitag both finished 1-for-3 with an RBI while Krichbaum and Wagner were 1-for-3 with a double.
FSU returns to the field tomorrow when it plays Virginia Wesleyan at noon and John Jay at 2 p.m.
