FREDERICK — Allegany, Garrett and Potomac State College are among eight teams fighting elimination beginning today in the NJCAA Division II, Region XX Women’s Basketball Tournament as the winner earns a spot in the National Championship in East Peoria, Ill.

The fourth-seeded Lakers and fifth-seeded Catamounts will square off in the tournament opener today at 1 p.m. The teams split their two season meetings with the home team winning both. Garrett (9-8) won 70-60 during the first contest, and the Cats (15-9) took the second 77-70.

Defending champion Allegany earned the No. 2 seed with a 19-4 record. The Trojans will follow the Cats and Lakers by playing seventh-seeded Dundalk at 3 p.m. Allegany won the only regular season meeting between the schools, 78-45.

The 5 o’clock contest has Baltimore City, the top seed, playing (8) Hagerstown, while Friday’s action ends with (3) Prince George’s facing tournament host (6) Frederick at 7 p.m.

Saturday’s semifinals begin at 5 p.m. when the Garrett/Potomac winner plays the Baltimore/Hagerstown winner. If ACM wins, they would meet the winner of Prince George’s and Frederick.

Sunday’s championship will be played at 1 p.m. with the winner earning a shot in the National Tournament on March 17-20 at Illinois Central College.

The Trojans entered last year’s national tournament as the eighth-seed before losing to the Community College of Rhode Island and Kalamazoo Valley Community College to be eliminated. They were the only two losses of the season for Allegany.
