Allegany wins Region XX opener

CATONSVILLE — Curtis Harpster picked up his eighth win, Kasey Clinton hit his seventh home run and third-seeded Allegany College of Maryland advanced to the second round of the Region XX, Division II Tournament by beating second-seeded Catonsville 8-3 Friday afternoon.

Harpster scattered eight hits, walked only one and worked out of trouble in the eighth inning to improve to 8-3. It was Allegany’s 40th win of the year.

“He threw a gem,” said Steve Bazarnic, ACM head coach. “He allowed a couple of runs in the eighth inning, but did a good job of working back from that.”

Clinton completed a three-hit day by hitting a two-run home run in the seventh inning. He added two singles and scored all three times he got a hit. John Shaffer also had three hits with a double and a run batted in. Matt Curtis doubled and singled, and had an RBI, and Ethan Newton singled twice.

The Trojans took a 1-0 lead in the first, and pushed the lead to 3-0 in the fourth. Three more runs in the fifth made it 6-0 and Clinton’s home run ended scoring.

Catonsville’s Jonathan Blacher drove in all three runs for the Cardinals. The first came on a sacrifice fly in the sixth and the last two on a single in the eighth.

Justin Robey and Glenn Davis added two singles for Catonsville.

Allegany (40-10) will play again today at 11 a.m. against the winner of Friday’s Harford vs. Frederick contest. The Trojans would play again later in the afternoon if they lose, and at 11 a.m. on Sunday should they win.

Frostburg State     5

FROSTBURG — Bryan Nolan doubled, singled and knocked in a pair of runs as fifth-seeded Mount Aloysius upset top-seeded Frostburg State in the opening round of the Allegheny Mountain Collegiate Conference Tournament at Bob Wells Field.

The loss put the Bobcats (29-12) into the losers bracket and against third-seeded Penn State Altoona in an elimination game Friday afternoon. FSU led 4-3 in the top of the fifth inning when it was suspended by rain. It will be resumed today at 10 a.m.

Matt Greene hit his 12th homer of the year in the suspended game, breaking the FSU single-season record.

Friday morning, Mount Aloysius scored three runs in the top of the ninth to break a 3-3 tie. The Bobcats, down 6-3, rallied in their half of the ninth with an RBI double by Doug Anuszewski and a sacrifice fly by Rich Schuler but the Mounties held on for the 6-5 win.

Anuszewski went 2-for-4 with a double for Frostburg State.

Zach O’Dell suffered the loss, allowing four runs, two earned, and three hits in two innings.

In Friday’s first game, No. 2 Penn State Behrend beat Penn State Altoona 5-4. Dustin Dubensky homered, doubled and knocked in three runs for Behrend. Chad Heine doubled and singled for Altoona.
