ACM splits with Rappahannock

— CUMBERLAND — Allegany College lost the first game of a doubleheader with Rappahannock (Va.) with the tying run 90 feet from home, only to come back and score nine runs in the second inning of the second game that forced a sweep between the Trojans and the Gulls Saturday at The Rock.

ACM lost for just the second time in 14 games when it got the winning run to first, but had to settle with a 5-4 defeat in the opening game. The Trojans left no doubt in the second when it compiled 15 hits in a 13-3 victory. Now 37-10, Allegany will host Hagerstown in a single game today beginning at noon.

Don Steffey hit two home runs, and then earned the save in leading the Gulls to the first game win. He hit a home run with a man on in the first inning, and added a solo shot in the third inning. Peter Carrolo added a 2-run single in the seventh.

Jon Kemmer had two doubles, a single and an RBI for Allegany. A.J. Robinson added an RBI double in the seventh. Curtis Harpster threw a complete game and struck out nine, but was given the loss and falls to 6-3.

Robinson helped the Trojans score nine runs in the second inning of game two by hitting a 2-run home run, and added a single to finish with three RBIs. Sean Collette drove in two runs with a single and a solo home run. Cory Dorman had two RBIs with two singles and Kemmer had four hits, a triple and three singles.

Kemmer improved his pitching record to 4-1 by striking out five and allowing five hits.
