YOUNGWOOD, Pa. — Garrett College collected its first playoff softball victory in the history of the program Saturday when the fourth-seeded Lakers upset top-seeded Westmoreland 6-4 in the first round of the Region XX Tournament Saturday at Westmoreland.
Melody Stolbom allowed four runs and six hits while striking out four to get the win. The Lakers held onto a 3-1 lead before the Wolfpack put three runs across the plate in the sixth. Garrett then came back to get its final three runs in the seventh, and Stolbom got it through the seventh.
Andi Miller drove in two runs with a double and two singles to lead the Lakers. Kim Michaels added a double, and Cara Savage went 3-for-4 with one RBI.
Courtney Morton and Carrie Bowser had two hits each for Westmoreland.
Garrett was unable to carry it’s momentum over to the second game of the afternoon, and suffered a 9-1 loss to CCAC-South.
Courtney Bender and Leah Biluca led South’s 10-hit effort. Biluca hit a triple and a home run, and Bender added a triple. Meghann Jobb doubled twice, and Val Bordona finished with a double and a single.
South scored a pair of runs in the opening frame, and made it 6-0 in the third. The final three runs were scored in the fourth.
Now 5-18, Garrett will play Westmoreland again today at 11 a.m. A win puts the Lakers into the the championship game with CCAC-South, while a loss eliminates them from the tournament.
