CRESSON, Pa. — Lindsay Freitag singled home the game-winning run in the top of the seventh inning to propel the Frostburg State softball team to a 1-0 victory over top-seeded and host Mt. Aloysius in the Allegheny Mountain Collegiate Conference Tournament Saturday afternoon.
The second-seeded Bobcats, a day after setting the school record for wins, advanced to the AMCC championship game for the third straight year. FSU (28-14) will play No. 5 Medaille on Sunday morning with the conference’s automatic bid to the NCAA Tournament on the line.
In a classic pitchers duel, the Bobcats got the only run of the game in the seventh when Jenna Delaney reached on a fielder’s choice, moved to second on a sacrifice bunt by Samantha Quirin, and scored on Freitag’s two-out single to center field.
Mount Aloysius (26-12), with a two-out error and a single, put two runners on base in the bottom of the seventh but Megan Magee got a fly out to end the game for her 17th win of the season. She scattered five hits, struck out eight and did not allow a runner past second base.
Carrie Shevock absorbed the loss, allowing six hits and striking out three.
Victoria Krichbaum doubled and singled and Megan Henne singled twice for Frostburg.
Potomac State 9 14
Lehigh Carbon 0 1
ALLENTOWN, Pa. — The best Pennsylvania junior college softball team is from West Virginia.
Again.
Coach Jim Walton’s Catamounts whipped Lehigh Carbon 9-0 and 14-1 on Saturday to repeat as the Pennsylvania Collegiate Athletic Association state champions.
Potomac State was the Western Pennsylvania Collegiate Conference champion and Lehigh Carbon was the Eastern Pennsylvania Collegiate Conference champion. The winners of the two conferences play in a best-of-three series each year to crown an overall state champion.
Potomac State (32-8) dominated both games in sweeping the best-of-three series.
In the opener, Tiffany Biggs fired a four-hit shutout and struck out 16 with only two walks in a six-inning game.
She aided her cause by ripping a three-run double in the sixth inning, and finished with a double, single and five RBIs.
Former Allegany High standout Bethany Hansel also had a big game, going 4-for-4 with a triple, two doubles and a single. Haylie Harper, another former Alco standout, doubled.
In the second game, the Catamounts scored a run in the first inning and put the game and championship on ice with 13 runs in the second.
Brittany Kolb hit a three-run homer in the second inning and also singled.
Aaryka Anglin stroked three singles and drove in two runs, Harper had two singles and three RBIs and Hansel added two singles.
Anglin, Kayla Stickel and Rochelle Wolford combined for a three-hitter, eight strikeouts and only one walk.
“It was a day of mixed emotions,’’ said Walton. “We lost seven special players that all contributed to the success of our program and they were a pleasure to coach,’’ he said of sophomores Anglin, Kolb, Wolford, Stickel, Kayla Watts, Taylor Butts and Lisa Barry. “All seven played both years.
“We fell a little short in our region playoffs, but it was nice to come back and win our second straight state championship.”
