CUMBERLAND — Cold shooting in the first half and too many turnovers doomed Potomac State’s chance at rallying to knock off Hagerstown in a 84-79 loss during the second night of the Pepsi Christmas Classic Saturday at Bob Kirk Arena.
The Hawks built a commanding lead early in the first half behind some hot shooting of their own, and a Catamounts squad that shot just 24 percent during the first half.
“They got at us early and were able to build an early lead and hold on to it through halftime,” said Potomac State Head Coach Shawn White. “In the second half (Darrell) Patterson and (Dalec) Cromwell hit some big shots and we were able to cut the lead to one point with under five minutes to play. From there, they were able to pull away down the stretch at the foul line.”
Cromwell finished the evening with a game-high 22 points before fouling out inside the final minute. Patterson added 14 points, and Tremayne Matthews and Tyrell Hill finished with 12.
Jonathan Ford had a Hagerstown best 18 points, while Donte Stuckey finished with 16. The two were key to the Hawks creating distance in the end by combining to go 5-for-6 from the free-throw line down the stretch.
“We played some good basketball to get back in the game after falling behind,” said White. “But we had 19 turnovers, and you can’t have that many against a very athletic Hagerstown team.”
The Cats (4-8) will play at home on Thursday against Prince George’s.
