GARDEN CITY, N.Y. — The Potomac State Catamounts played their way into the NJCAA Division I Eastern District finals by beating USC-Sumter 4-0 Saturday, but still face an uphill battle when they face Spartanburg Methodist today with a JUCO World Series trip waiting in the wings.
Andy Berry and David Higgins combined to scatter nine hits in the shutout with both working their way out of jams.
Kevin Griffin hit a double and singled twice to drive in one run, and Dominic Hayes added a single and a double with one RBI. Josh Birthisel contributed an RBI double.
Sumter got three consecutive singles in second inning, but with the help of an outfield assist by Hayes the Cats were able to avoid allowing a run.
Mike Caddell, with a pair of singles, was the only Sumter player with more than one hit.
Jamie Holler minimized most of the damage as Sumter’s starter. He was able to use two pickoffs to escape two big innings, but got a lack of run support.
Potomac State (37-13) will send Jonathan Hash to the hill today when it plays Spartanburg at noon. The Cats must beat the Pioneers twice in order to advance to the Division I World Series in Grand Junction, Colo. Potomac State lost to Spartanburg 8-3 in an opening round game on Friday.
