ACCIDENT — Accident resident Peggy Santamaria has been appointed to a directorship position in sports medicine researcher Dr. Jolie Bookspan’s Academy of Functional Exercise Medicine.
Santamaria, named academy director of developing abilities, will take Bookspan’s teachings to the staff and trainees at Appalachian Crossroads in Oakland. The program targets job coaches who work with, train and find employment for developmentally disabled adults.
“The program teaches healthy movement techniques to train useful work skills and prevent injuries,” Bookspan said. “We hope this program will become a model for programs all over the nation like it.”
The academy, an international project based in the United States, was founded by Bookspan to teach individuals and groups healthy biomechanics and instill healthy habits for daily life instead of injury-producing habits.
Bookspan emphasizes replacing artificial exercises with real-life movement habits that are retrained to stop sources of pain and restore ability to do more.
Santamaria, a yoga instructor in Garrett County who also sits on the board of directors at Appalachian Crossroads, has worked primarily with people aged 50 and over.
“At Flowery Vale Senior Health & Fitness Center, I teach yoga and stretching to people with a wide variety of abilities and limitations,” she said. “So I am constantly doing research to see what the latest information is on movement to improve quality of life.”
