Former local man promoted within U.S. Forest Service

Cumberland — Brad Nelson, a graduate of Allegany High School and Frostburg State University, has been named wildlife program manager for the Southern Region by the U.S. Forest Service, an agency of the Department of Agriculture. He is based in Atlanta.

Nelson has more than 30 years of federal service as a wildlife biologist with the Forest Service and Bureau of Land Management. 

He has held positions in Alexandria, Va., Rawlins, Wyo., and most recently, as a supervisor on the Allegheny National Forest in Warren, Pa. 

Nelson has worked on a variety of wildlife projects involving elk, antelope, bighorn sheep, river otters, fishers, white-tailed deer, eagles, bats and raptors. In Pennsylvania, he worked closely with game officials and was a popular speaker at various hunting and fishing organizations.

In his new position, Nelson has wildlife budget and partnership coordination responsibilities for national forests in 13 southern states and Puerto Rico.

Nelson and his wife, Rebecca, have relocated to Atlanta. He is the son of K.O. and Colleen Nelson, McMullen Highway, near Pinto.
