Southern suffers season-ending

OAKLAND — Joey Bavir scored an unassisted goal with 8:37 left in the second overtime to lift Smithsburg to a 3-2 victory over Southern in their Class 1A West Region boys soccer first-round playoff game Thursday night.

It was the second unassisted goal of the night or Bavir, who had given the Leopards a 1-0 lead in the opening minutes.

Southern tied it when Aryne Riley scored on a feed from Jake Bramande with 17:09 left in the first half.

The Rams went ahead on an unassisted goal by Jasper Tasker with 29:47 left in regulation. But Smithsburg’s Yusif Kadi tied it, less than five minutes later.

Smithsburg (3-12) led in shots 11-10 and both teams had three corner kicks. Seth Ingram had six goalie saves for Southern and Dan Hallman had three for Smithsburg.

A young Southern team finished 1-14 in a season that included seven tough losses in games decided by one goal. Two were in overtime, and two came against Northern, one against Allegany and one against Bishop Walsh.

Smithsburg will play at Mountain Ridge in the quarterfinals on Tuesday at 8 p.m.

LOYSBURG, Pa. — Hyndman, trailing 2-0 at halftime, scored three straight goals in second half and came away with a 3-3 tie with Northern Bedford County.

It was the final regular-season game for the playoff-bound Hornets (11-6-1), who play at Fannett-Metal in a first-round District 5 game on Saturday at 1 o’clock.

Coty Zimmerman, Cody Gibbner and Brad Torbet scored goals for Hyndman, which led 3-2 after Torbet’s goal. Goalie Tyler Jamison made eight saves.

Tanner Russell, Justin Lutzenberger and Trenton Burnes scored for NBC.

Hyndman led in shots 14-12 and both teams teams had two corner kicks.
