Miners notch ninth shutout

Mountain Ridge one win from posting perfect regular season

From Staff Reports

FROSTBURG — Its ninth shutout of the season, and fifth straight, lifted unbeaten and top-ranked Mountain Ridge to its 13th straight win, a 2-0 decision over third-ranked Fort Hill in high school boys soccer Thursday night.

Goalkeeper Josh Weimer needed to make only three saves to get the shutout, and was helped by a defense that allowed the Sentinels only five shots.

Justin Winebrenner gave the Miners a 1-0 lead with a goal at 28:12 of the first half, on an assist by Matt Cunningham.

Cunningham scored the only goal of the second half, on a feed from David Hobel.

Fort Hill goalie Daniel Johnson finished with 15 saves in the loss.

The Miners won the jayvee game 3-2, handing Fort Hill its first loss of the season. Chris Ranker scored twice for Mountain Ridge, and Jay Yang had the third goal. Andrew Amoruso scored both Fort Hill goals. The Miners jayvees are now 8-1-1.

Mountain Ridge will host Southern on Wednesday in its final regular season match. Fort Hill plays at Bishop Walsh on Saturday and would clinch at least a tie for the City League championship with a win.
