FROSTBURG — Calvin Hilliard hit a pair of free throws with 12.5 seconds to go as third-seeded Southern edged sixth-seeded Northern in their Class 1A West Region first-round playoff game.
The teams resumed their Garrett County rivalry at Mountain Ridge, which hosted a game that was to have been played at Southern Saturday night but was postponed several times because of wintry weather.
Southern (12-8) plays second-seeded Mountain Ridge tonight, at Mountain Ridge, at 7 p.m. The winner will play at Allegany in the sectional final on Thursday.
Last night only four players scored for Southern but all four reached double figures. D.J. Ritchie hit five 3-point goals and had 17 points, Hilliard had 12, Joe Kisselovich 11 and Ben Meyers 10.

Northern led 33-29 entering the fourth quarter and was up 49-48 when Hilliard canned the tying and go-ahead free throws. The Huskies got the final shot, a 10- to 12-foot jumper along the baseline, but was unable to convert.
A close game throughout, Southern’s largest lead was six points, and Northern’s largest was five.
Hilliard had nine of his 12 points in the Rams’ 20-point fourth quarter. Two of Ritchie’s 3-pointers came in the period, one with a minute to go that gave the Rams the lead.
Gibson made five field goals and 9-of-10 foul shots. He had 15 of his 19 points in a big second half for the Huskies.
