Alco routs Petersburg to finish unbeaten for second time in history

February 26, 2010 — PETERSBURG, W.Va. — Allegany had a chance to do something that hadn’t been done in 16 years and wasted no time in getting it done.

Led by Casey Roberts, Dustin Wharton and Jordan Grady, the No. 1 Campers rolled to a 91-60 victory over Petersburg Wednesday night to finish its regular season 20-0, the second time in school history that the Campers finished a season undefeated. The 1993-1994 Campers, coached by Toby Eirich, finished 22-0.

“These kids have worked real hard,” said current Allegany head coach Tedd Eirich, “And these seniors have played together for a lot of years and its a real achievement for them.”

Roberts, Wharton and Grady combined to score 72 of the Campers’ 91 points. Roberts led with a game-high 30 points on 11 field goals and 5-of-8 from the free-throw line. Wharton scored 22 points on eight baskets and 3-of-4 from the line. Grady finished with 20 points. He hit nine field goals and made two free throws. Roberts and Wharton each had three 3-pointers. Grady finished with a double-double as he had 15 rebounds. He also had seven assists and five steals. Roberts had six assists and five steals.

Allegany stormed out to a 14-0 lead and finished the first period up 28-9 and led at halftime 46-13 after an 18-4 second period.

Allegany led 67-40 after the third period as Petersburg outscored the Campers’ 27-21 going into the final eight minutes.

Petersburg was led by Ben Halterman’s 12 points and Britton Shobe’s 11. Marcus Hahn and Matt Mongold each scored nine points.

Allegany won the junior varsity game, 42-38.

The Vikings (8-9) visited East Hardy Thursday night to finish their regular season.

The Campers will play the winner of Saturday’s Hancock at Fort Hill playoff game Tuesday at Campobello beginning at 7 p.m.
