February 28, 2010 — HANCOCK — Sophomore Kammari Powell scored a career-high 20 points, and couldn’t have come up with a better time to do it as Fort Hill avoided being upset by a pesky Hancock team with a 84-82 overtime win in the first round of the Maryland 1A West Section Playoffs.
Powell sank seven field goals, including two threes and was 4-of-5 from the line in the overtime period, to reach 20 points. He added four assists. Mike Crabtree was a point off Powell’s pace to finish with 19 points and he grabbed nine rebounds. Garrett D’Atri continued his hot streak by scoring 16 points, and Payden Yonker led the Sentinels on the glass with 13 rebounds to go with his six points.
A strange first half saw the Panthers take a 20-18 advantage into the second quarter, but then watched as Fort Hill outscored Hancock 21-8 in the second period to lead 39-28 at intermission. The Panthers barrelled back behind an incredible individual performance from Jared McCoy to take a 56-55 lead into the fourth, and regulation finished with the score knotted at 72.
McCoy finished with 37 points, but scored 11 of those in the third, 10 more in the fourth and had eight of the Panthers’ 10 points in the extra time. Spencer Heller scored 22 points, and Ethan Martin scored 11.
McCoy had a chance to force a second overtime when he was fouled on a last-second shot. He sank the first of his three free throws to pull the score to 84-82, but missed the second to end the threat.
“It was a fun, exciting game to play in. I thought Kammari played really big for us, and we stuck together to win as a team,” said Fort Hill coach Glenn Rice. “The McCoy kid was extremely hot no matter who we put on him, but with the injuries we’ve been dealing with it’s nice to see the kids play hard no matter what we ask them to do.”
Fort Hill (13-6) will play Allegany Tuesday evening, at Allegany, in the section semifinals. Hancock concludes its season at 4-15.

INWOOD, W.Va. — Three-point shooting gave Bishop Walsh hope late, but an ice-cold start doomed the Spartans as they dropped a close decision to Musselman Saturday afternoon that ends their regular season at 8-15.
Musselman flew out of the gates to score the first 15 points of the event, but was then outscored 8-2 over the final minutes to carry a nine-point lead into the next quarter. The Spartans managed to shave only two points off that advantage before halftime, and still trailed by seven (30-23) entering the fourth.
Bishop Walsh made it’s move in the fourth, but the Applemen were 5-for-6 from the foul line in the final period, and 12-of-14 overall, to stay ahead of the Spartans.
Pat Jones carried the hot hand for the Spartans, finishing with a game-high 24 points, and knocked down four of the team’s seven three-pointers. Quincy Redmon skied for a team-high 11 rebounds to go with seven points.
“We showed a lot of heart even though we lost,” said Jeff Rhodes, Bishop Walsh head coach. “We knew it was going to be tough to comeback from that far down, but we never worried about the score and just played hard.”
Musselman got 15 points from Morgan McDonald, while Mile McDonough added 11.
It is the final game for the Spartans before playing in the Alhambra Tournament beginning March 18.
“We’ve played a lot better in the second half of the season, and I’m really happy to we have continued to improve. Now we got the ACITs and I’m looking forward to competing against those teams,” said Rhodes.
A 54-42 win for the BW jayvee team gave the squad a 19-2 record for the season. Liam Rhodes scored 14 points, and Shannon Redmon added 13 in the win.

Friday at Frostburg State University a group of 13 Spartans made some of their own history by making a stand against 15 years of Alhambra Catholic Invitational Tournament frustration, and when Pat Jones’ floater went threw the net with six seconds left, it ended a Bishop Walsh streak that has lasted longer than most of it’s players have known the game of basketball as the Spartans beat St. Benedict’s Prep (N.J.), 61-60, in a drama-filled contest that kicked off Day Two of ACIT action. -
