Keyser’s rally trips Walsh, 54-48

February 26, 2010 — CUMBERLAND — Bishop Walsh built an 8-point lead in the first quarter, but Keyser slowly chipped away to overcome the deficit, outscoring the Spartans 28-17 in the second half to leave Cumberland with a 54-48 Appalachian Mountain Athletic Conference win.

Wes Washington put together a game-high 20 points on seven field goals and two free throws. Peyton Hartman added 14 points. Washington scored nine points in the second half while Hartman added seven.

The Golden Tornado found itself down 21-13 by the close of the first quarter, and was still trailing 31-26 by halftime. Keyser was able to close the lead down and entered the fourth quarter tied at 42.

Connor O’Rourke finished the evening with 19 points to lead Bishop Walsh, and Quincy Redmon posted a double-double by grabbing 16 rebounds to go with his 10 points.

Keyser improves to 10-10 overall, and to 7-7 in the AMAC. Bishop Walsh slips to 8-14 overall and to 4-8 AMAC. It will host Hampshire tonight.

FROSTBURG — Mountain Ridge never trailed, but needed a late surge to put away Allegany and capture the championship of the Mountain Ridge Freshmen Tournament Thursday evening.

Jacob Kyle scored nine points and Josh Delaney posted eight for the Miners, who finish their season 15-3. Branden Markwood and Josh Vanmeter both added five points.

The Campers received 11 points from Hunter Marrale, eight from Madison Wolford and six from Hayden Bosley.

Mountain Ridge led 6-4 after one quarter and 19-12 after two. The Miners held a 27-21 lead after three, but Allegany made a run to tie the score at 27.

Nathan Haberlein, of Mountain Ridge, was the winner of the 3-point contest held at halftime of the championship game.

The consolation game was cancelled when Garrett County schools let out early.
