ROCKVILLE — D.J. Ritchie narrowly missed a half-court shot as Montgomery edged Garrett, 89-87 at Montgomery-Rockville Tuesday in a Maryland JUCO Conference match-up.
The loss is even more disheartening for the Lakers when you factor shooting 10-for-22 from the free throw line.
The score was tied at 40 at halftime and the teams traded leads in the second half as well. Montgomery’s largest lead was seven with 8:00 remaining.
With Garrett down 89-87 in the late going, Antonio Butler missed two free throws forthe Lakers. Ritchie grabbed a rebound at the other end, then came back down and missed a three-pointer. After a missed putback by the Lakers, Garrett fouled Trent Walker with :03 left. He missed the front end of a one-and-one to set up the missed heave in the final seconds.
Montgomery made 15 three-pointers. Phoenix Butler-Poole had five and 25 points total. Tim Christian made 6 on his way to 25 points.
Din Moore led the Lakers with 21. Butler finished with 17 points, nine rebounds, five assists and two steals.
Garrett (9-8) is now 5-7 in the MDJUCO and plays Saturday at Hagerstown.

Frostburg State 59
BRIDGEWATER, Va. — Jessica Mullen had 24 points and seven steals while Katelynn Hottinger had nine points and dominated inside with 17 rebounds and nine blocked shots to lead Bridgewater to a 70-59 win over Frostburg State in college women’s basketball Monday night.
Cassidy Burkhoolder added 16 points and Morgan Holly 12 for the Eagles (8-7), who led 39-24 at halftime.
Stephanie Straka had 16 points, five steals and four rebounds for Frostburg State (5-12). Elaina Hummel had 15 points and Ronje James 12.
The Bobcats rallied in the second half, getting to within 53-50 after a jumper by Straka with nine minutes to go, and to 54-53 after a three-pointer by Hummel at the 8:21 mark but were unable to get over the hump. Bridgewater outscored FSU 16-6 the rest of the way.
On Saturday, Marymount opened up a 16-point cushion at halftime and cruised in the second half to a 68-46 win over visiting Frostburg State.
Both teams overcame 20-plus turnovers, but the Saints (14-4, 4-1 CAC) capitalized off of Frostburg's mistakes, scoring 28 points off turnovers to Frostburg's 13.
The Bobcats (5-11, 1-5 CAC) were able to stand their ground in the opening minutes of the first half, but the home team poured it on and took a seven point advantage, 12-5, with 11:34 left in the first frame.
FSU had no answer for Marymount's inside game. The Saints out-rebounded the Bobcats 68-46 and scored 26 points in the paint to Frostburg's six.
Frostburg plays at Mount Aloysius tonight.
