From Staff Reports

HAGERSTOWN — Calvary Christian Academy used a 16-9 second quarter to take a one-point halftime lead, then outscored Highland View by seven in the second half to take home a season-opening 37-29 victory Thursday night in high school girls basketball.

Jo Jo Carr led Calvary with 12 points, while Rae Heavner led the way on the boards, picking up where she left off last year with 22 rebounds. Heavner and Tiana Thompson both scored six points.

After trailing 10-4 at the end of the first quarter and leading 20-19 at the half, the Eagles took a 29-21 lead into the fourth quarter.

HAGERSTOWN — For Calvary Christian Academy, it was a sluggish season-opener as the Eagles had trouble generating offense in a 32-25 loss to Highland View Academy.

Calvary fell behind 4-2 after one, and held leads of 10-8 at the half, and 17-14 entering the fourth, but Highland outscored the Eagles 18-8 down the stretch to secure the win.

Austin Potts led Calvary with 10 points, while R.D. Chisholm hit for six. Ryan McKenzie had nine rebounds and A.J. Saweikis had five assists.

“It was a defensive struggle,” said Calvary head coach Chip Miller. “The offense is just way behind right now, which I anticipated. But the kids played hard and played well; the game was certainly well within their reach. We just didn’t execute in the fourth quarter when we needed to.”

Calvary will open its Mason-Dixon Christian Conference schedule Tuesday in Chambersburg against Shalom. The Eagles are then home for two straight games.
