WENTWORTH, N.C. — Jordan Gipson led five scorers with 20 points as the Garrett Lakers defeated North Carolina Prep, 100-90, in the consolation game of the Rockingham Eagles Tip-off Tournament on Sunday.
Shawn Greenfield added 17 points, Howard Ferguson had 15, Chris Hilliard 14 and Dominique Goodwin 11 for the Lakers (1-1). Doma Ibrahim added nine points and seven rebounds.
Gipson, a 6-4 wing, hit nine field goals in getting his 20 points. Greenfield had an especially productive day considering he missed more than 13 minutes of the second half with foul trouble. He finished with 17 points, seven assists and three steals. Hilliard also had seven rebounds.
Lonnie Keilet scored 20 points to lead North Carolina Prep.
Garrett led 44-40 at halftime and got the lead to as high as 15 points in the second half. Greenfield was quickly whistled for his third and fourth fouls in the second half, and North Carolina Prep closed to within four points with just under six minutes to play.
Greenfield then returned, and the Lakers were able to pull away a bit to seal the victory.
“We faced two totally different styles of basketball in two days,’’ said Garrett coach Dennis Gibson. “Today, it was a run-and-shoot by North Carolina Prep, and there were a lot of three-point shots. Saturday, Hargrave Military was a power team with six or eight major-college signees. We had to make a tough adjustment quickly. It was a good win.”
Garrett plays at the West Virginia Wesleyan jayvees on Wednesday, then make their home debut this weekend in the Railey Realty Tournament.

WENTWORTH, N.C. — Shawn Greenfield scored 21 points for Garrett, but the Lakers opened the season with a loss to Hargrave Military in the opening round of the Rockingham Eagles Tournament.
Hargrave got a game-high 32 points from L. Brown.
“They have six Division I signees,” said Garrett coach Dennis Gibson. “They’re not the optimal first game for us, but I thought they would give us a good test and be comparable to teams we’ll likely play later in the season. I thought we played them tough defensively, but we didn’t capitalize on their mistakes.”
The Lakers trailed by 12 (36-24) at halftime, and Hargrave put together a few quick baskets in the early second half. The Lakers were hurt by going just 10-of-21 from the foul line.

Potomac State 83
FREDERICK — Potomac State missed its opportunity to seal a victory late in regulation, and Frederick outscored the Catamounts 14-4 in overtime to win the consolation game of the Goodwill Tournament.
Alex Jackson put together a 35-point performance, leading all scorers, in sending the Cougars to victory. Q’Monte Matheny added 15 points, Louis Stevens scored 14 and Ramon Smith 13.
Frederick led 42-34 at halftime, but lost the lead and got a steal and an intentional foul on Potomac State to force overtime.
Down 79-77 with 30 seconds left, the Cougars stole an inbounds pass and the intentional foul sent the Cougars to the free-throw line. Both free throws were good, tying the game at 79.
Marcus Quarles led Potomac State with 24 points, and Jordan Brooks added 15 points, five assists and two steals. Darrell Patterson scored 14 points, and Tremayne Mathews added 10 rebounds and four points. Mo Newby had a team-high 13 rebounds.
Jordan Brooks was named to the all-tournament team.
TCI defeated Delaware Tech in the championship.
Potomac State (1-2) will host Allegany College on Tuesday at 7 p.m.
