SHORT GAP, W.Va. — Frankfort came on strong in the middle quarters, led by Katie Jan, to continue its recent run of success as the Falcons defeated Hampshire, 63-44, Wednesday night in AMAC girls high school basketball action at Frankfort.
Jan scored 21 points for the Falcons and had four rebounds, three assists and nine steals. Stephanie Cornachia scored 17 points and had eight rebounds, while Mikala Miller hit a pair of three-point goals to finish with 16 points, adding six rebounds and six assists. Alyssa Lantz contributed five rebounds and five assists.
Hampshire was led by Allyson Fout with 10 points, while Ericka Gordon and Alexis Nickleson scored eight.
Hampshire took a 7-0 lead to begin the game, before Frankfort clawed back into it by tying the score at 13 entering the second quarter. The Falcons then got serious, outscoring the Trojans in the second, 19-6, to make it 32-19 at the half, then 21-7 in the third to take a 53-26 lead entering the fourth. In that time, Jan scored 17 of her 21 points.
The Falcons have won three of their last four games and four of their last six to go a game over .500 at 11-10. Head coach Mike Orndorff says his team is playing its best basketball at the perfect time of the season, as the Falcons attempt to reach the West Virginia state tournament for the fourth consecutive year.
“I certainly hope so,” said Orndorff. “I really hope we are. So far we have a nice roll going into the playoffs and that’s exactly where we want to be at this time.”
Frankfort will play at Bishop Walsh today, while Hampshire concludes the regular season at 9-12.
Frankfort won the junior vasity game, 40-30, as Autumn Cox scored 14 points with 12 rebounds, and Crystyal Yaider scored 13. Holly Kaiser and Katherine Largent both scored eight points for the Trojans.
No. 1 Southern 68, B. Walsh 24
OAKLAND — Southern cruised past Bishop Walsh to clinch the Appalachian Mountain Athletic Conference championship.
The Rams (17-2, 14-1 AMAC) stifled the Spartans in a 12-4 first quarter, then outscored BW 22-13 in the second in building a 34-17 halftime lead.
Hannah Horne scored 13 to lead Southern while Mandy Sweitzer and Kambrie Bosley each had 10. Nicole Ross scored eight points for Bishop Walsh (2-23, 0-12).
Marley Merrick and Shay Tasker had six points for the Rams’ jayvees in a 31-15 win. Maggie Mathews also had six for the Spartans.
Both teams play again tonight. Southern hosts Tucker County while Bishop Walsh (2-23, 0-12) entertains Frankfort.
No. 2 Fort Hill 80, Northern 42
CUMBERLAND — Sarah Lowery poured in 26 points and collected 11 rebounds to lead No. 2 Fort Hill over visiting Northern.
The Sentinels matched Northern’s 42 points in the first half, leading by 25 at the break.
Kirsten Rayner scored 18 in the loss.
Alesha Jackson had 22 points with four assists, Sydney Winn 19 points, five steals and three assists and Alexis Kimmel had four points, seven steals and seven assists for the Sentinels (13-5, 11-3 AMAC).
Kirsten Rayner had a team high 18 points for Northern (4-16, 3-13).
Cheyane Rice had 14 points to lead the Sentinlels to a 49-23 win in the jayvee game. Emma Edwards had 11 for the Huskies.
Hyndman 69, Johnstown CA 47
HYNDMAN, Pa. — Hyndman had five score in double-figures in a win over Johnstown Christian Academy.
The Hornets held a slim lead throughout the first half and were up 29-21 at halftime.
They pulled away with a 23-12 third quarter.
Sara Leydig led the way with 20. Karly Willison had scored 15, Kyndra Dawson 13, and Jalissa Snyder and Jessica Ringler 10 each.
Maddie Sprankle led Johnstown Christian with 19.
Hyndman (8-10) will play its regular season finale at Fannett-Metal on Friday at 6 p.m.
