FROSTBURG — Shae Winner scored a game-high 22 points, with nine coming in the fourth quarter, to lift Mountain Ridge to a 62-50 win over Fort Hill in the season opener for both teams Thursday evening.

Winner, who hit seven field goals and 8 of 11 free throws, also grabbed nine rebounds and had seven steals in a strong all-around game. Sarah Raines also had a big night with 14 points, four assists and three steals. Carlie Lewis and Anna Broadwater hit three-point goals and had nine points.

Alesha Jackson led Fort Hill with 16 points while Sarah Lowery and Alyssia Whitacre had 13.

Mountain Ridge trailed 18-9 after the first quarter but made up for the slow start with a 21-point second period to tie the game 30-30 at halftime. Winner had seven of the 21 points and Raines six.

The lead went back and forth throughout the third quarter, which ended with the Miners up 43-41. The Miners, behind Winner’s nine fourth-quarter points, stayed on top the majority of the final eight minutes.

Mountain Ridge also won the jayvee game 52-23. Amie Blank had 18 points and Lexie Metz 16 for the Miners. Morgan Cranford had nine for the Sentinels.

Fort Hill plays again Saturday, at home, against Hedgesville at 3:30 p.m. Mountain Ridge hosts Bishop Walsh Monday evening.

Allegany 48, Northern 35

ACCIDENT — Courtney Landis scored 17 points and Micah Wormack grabbed 18 rebounds as Allegany defeated Northern in the season opener both teams.

Landis hit three three-point goals and also had four steals and four assists for the Campers, who led 10-4 after the first quarter and 26-12 at the half.

Wormack added five points, four blocked shots and four steals, and Kristen Sell had 11 points and five steals for Allegany.

Kirsten Rayner hit seven field goals for a team-high 14 points for Northern.

The Huskies won the jayvee game 33-25 behind a 16-point game by Emily Parandhamaia.

Northern will host Frankfort on Saturday. Allegany plays again Tuesday at Musselman.

Southern 62, Hedgesville 61

HEDGESVILLE, W.Va. — Raeslee Weimer made her only two free throws late in the game that helped Southern hold off Hedgesville in a close contest from beginning to end Thursday night in Hedgesville.

Alicia Roth and Kambrie Bosley combined to score 43 points in the Rams’ season opener.

Kristen Nunn scored 18, Bianca Creamer had 16 and Alexis Taylor finished with 11 for Hedgesville (0-2).

Roth made nine baskets and was perfect on four free-throw attempts for her game-high 22 points. Bosley made three three-pointers, one two, and hit 10-of-11 free throws for her 21 points.

Southern held slim leads in the first half, 16-13 after the first quarter and 34-31 at halftime. Hedgesville came back to go up 47-43 at the end of the third quarter.

“It was a hard-fought game for the first game,” said Southern head coach Danny Bosley. “It was back-and-forth. A six-point lead was the largest anybody had.”

Weimer, who finished with seven points, made the front end of the one-on-one and then sank the second to give Southern a 62-59 lead with 23 seconds to play. As a team, Southern was sharp from the line, making 19 of 24 attempts.

Hedgesville won the junior varsity game, 35-29. Marley Merrick led Southern with 10 points.

The Rams (1-0) will host Hampshire on Tuesday.

Calvary 45, Highland View 18

HAGERSTOWN — Karly Hipsley scored 18 points and collected 14 rebounds with five steals to lead Calvary Christian Academy to its first win of the season Thursday in a non-league game at Highland View Christian.

Calvary (1-1), in its second of three games in a four-day span, stuck to the basics in putting away Highland View, taking a 13-2 lead after the first quarter and a 21-4 lead at the half.

Kerrenne Shaffer also had a double-double with 10 points and 10 rebounds for the Eagles. Tia Anyona had seven points for Highland View.

Calvary is back on the court tonight, 5:30, at home against Cumberland Valley Christian.

Union 60, Paw Paw 39

PAW PAW, W.Va. — Tiffany Jones and Montana Kitzmiller combined to score 36 points in leading Union over Paw Paw Wednesday night at Paw Paw High School in the season opener for both teams.

The Tigers outscored the Pirates 30-9 in the fourth quarter after Paw Paw lost two girls due to foul trouble.

Paw Paw led at halftime, 17-11, and both teams finished the third quarter tied at 30.

Jones finished with 19 points, hitting nine baskets and a free throw, while Kitzmiller made six baskets and half of her 10 foul shots to lead Union. Haelli Killen added 12 points.

Paw Paw was led by Alivia Snyder’s 17 points on seven baskets, including a three-pointer, and two free throws. Belle Harold added 16 points on six buckets, including a three, and going 3-for-4 from the foul line.

Paw Paw (0-1) hosts Salisbury tonight while Union (1-1) hosts Hundred on Saturday.
