CUMBERLAND — Conference champion Allegany placed three players on the All-City Team that helped the Campers win their fourth straight league title.
DeTonia DeGross and Leah Wormack represent the last two winners of the Appalachian Mountain Athletic Conference Player of the Year, and are joined by Jenna Mathews as the three contributions from the Campers.
Second-place finisher Fort Hill sends two to the All-City in Andrea Armstrong and Lindsey Fisher.
Bishop Walsh’s Chloe Detrick rounded out the six-player team voted on by head coaches of the three Cumberland high schools.
Allegany was a perfect 4-0 in its games with Fort Hill and Bishop Walsh. The Campers are on a run of 14 consecutive wins against it’s two Cumberland rivals, with the last loss coming in January of 2005 with a 43-33 loss to Fort Hill. The last three titles have been outright, while the Campers split the crown with the Sentinels in ’05-06.
• Sophomore Wormack finished as the league’s leading scorer after scoring a total of 75 points in the four games for an average of 18.8. That was six points better than the next closest scorer.
She scored no less than 15 points in any of the four games, and was one of only two players to score at least 20. She did it twice, getting 21 one time and 22 another.
She made 15 of her 21 free throws for 71.4 percent.
On the season, Wormack averaged 15 points an outing, as well as 8.5 rebounds and 3.5 blocks per game.
• DeGross, a senior, is making her third appearance on the All-City team after helping the Campers to a 4-12 record over those three seasons.
She is the reigning Times-News Player of the Year and was the AMAC Player of the Year in 2008.
This year she scored 40 points in the four league games, and though she attempted just 10 free throws she made every one.
She averaged 11.6 points a night for the entire season, and added to that 4.4 rebounds, 4.1 assists and 4.5 steals. She was a 65 percent shooter from the free-throw line.
• Mathews finishes out Allegany’s selections after earning a repeat trip to the All-City team after joining DeGross last season.
In the four City games she scored a total of 42 points to put her just ahead of DeGross in the scoring rundown. She averaged 10.5 points a night, scoring in double figures for the first two games before getting nine and eight in the final two.
Her 46.7 percent (7-for-15) shooting from the free throw line was well off her season average of 68.3 percent. Her scoring average for the season was slightly lower than her league average at 9.9 points.
Jenna also was named second-team All-AMAC.
• Armstrong is the second sophomore on the All-City squad, guaranteeing the continuation of the inside battles between her and Wormack for a couple more seasons.
She averaged 10.8 points a game against league competition, scoring a total of 43 points. She scored in double figures in three of four games, and was sharp from the foul line by hitting 13-of-18 for 72.2 percent.
Andrea was the second leading scorer for the Sentinels throughout the season by averaging 11.3 a game. Her free-throw percentage in the league was spot on with her shooting for the season as she was 73.9 percent from the line. She also averaged 8.7 rebounds every time she took the floor.
• Fisher, a senior, played in just three City contests, but made her presence known by scoring 22 points one time out and averaging 12 in City play to lead her team.
She made seven of the 10 free throws she tried, which matched her season percentage of 70.2. For the entire campaign she averaged 14.7 points a night, as well as 6.5 assists and 3.3 steals.
• Detrick’s addition to the team makes four seniors on this year’s squad.
She played in three league games and averaged 7.3 points per. She sank four out of six free throws, and made four three-point buckets along the way. She made three of her threes and scored 11 of her points in one game.
Detrick was able to pick her play up during her contests with Fort Hill and Allegany. She normally averaged 4.9 points per game, but was able to bring her outside shooting by making 24 threes in 23 total games.
