HAGERSTOWN — Three area basketball players and one coach participated in the McDonald’s Roundball Classic at Hagerstown Community College this past weekend.
Mountain Ridge’s David Hobel, Allegany’s Cody Ellsworth and Hampshire’s Robbie Miller participated in various games with more than 160 other high school athletes from 96 schools in five states.
Hobel scored six points for the National team in its 67-63 loss to American in the Boys Four-Star Elite contest. Hobel was also the winner of one of two three-point contests held.
Hobel lead the area in scoring with an average of 21.3 points a game, and hit 151-of-183 free throws for an area leading 82.5 percent clip from the foul line.
Ellsworth and Miller were members of the National squad in the boys Shooting Stars game. Neither player scored as the National team lost 70-54.
Ellsworth finished his senior campaign as the Campers’ third-leading scorer at 11.8 points a game. Miller was the Trojans’ second-leading scorer with an average of 13.6.
The competition was divided into different skill levels. The Shooting Stars was the first level, and the Four-Star Elite was one level up. The highest level for the players was the Premier games. A total of five basketball games were played.
Allegany’s Jim O’Neal, who led the Campers to the Maryland 1A West and Appalachian Mountain Athletic Conference titles, was the head coach for National team in the girls Elite game. The National team lost 57-52.
Proceeds from the event benefited children with congenital heart disease and the Ronald McDonald House.
