FROSTBURG — A run to begin the day and another in the second quarter helped Cathedral collect its first win of the 50th ACIT by creating some breathing room against Bishop Walsh that turned into an 87-47 victory for the Gaels.
Cathedral scored the first 14 points of the first quarter, and the first eight minutes of the evening finished with the score 22-9. The Gaels increased that through the early second period before the Spartans got it back to an 11-point spread at the halfway point of the quarter. From there, Cathedral would outscore Bishop Walsh 16-3 over the final four minutes of the half to take a 45-21 advantage into the locker room.
Jamar Coke, who led the Gaels in scoring in all three tournament games, scored a game-high 27 points. He also led all players with seven assists and five steals. Senior Paul Taylor helped his team to the early leads by scoring all seven of his points in the first half, and Ferras Saleh scored 10 points. Tevon Williams and Daynon Rodney-O’Brien each scored eight points.
Bishop Walsh was led by freshman Quincy Redmon with 15 points, and Pat Jones scored 14 points. Those two players accounted for the first 14 points the Spartans scored. Redmon led the team with six rebounds.
In the end it was Cathedral’s speed that did in the Spartans. “We usually play a run-and-gun style like we did today. That’s Cathedral basketball,” said Gaels head coach Brian Daly.
“It’s always great to get to come here and play,” he said. “We love Cumberland, and the kids always enjoy playing against quality teams like this.”
Cathedral finishes the season at 21-17. The Spartans close the campaign with a 8-19 mark.
