CUMBERLAND — A two-run rally in the ninth inning won the game and clinched the Mountain District championship for Fort Cumberland Post 13 as they defeated Grantsville Post 214 in American Legion baseball action Saturday at Legion Field.
Fort Cumberland (23-9) will next play in a play-in game Saturday or Sunday against an opponent yet to be determined.
Trailing 5-4 entering the bottom of the ninth, Fort Cumberland’s Drew O’Neal was hit by a pitch to lead off and moved to second on a sacrifice by Aaron Lehman. O’Neal then scored on an infield error on which Eli Souders went all the way to third. Mike Moyer followed with a grounder to third and Souders just beat the throw at the plate for the winning run.
Winning pitcher Dan Strietbeck doubled and singled for Fort Cumberland, while O’Neal had four singles. Matt Propst and Pat Livingston both had two singles and Souders and Zach Bradfield both doubled.
For Grantsville, Steven Holtschneider homered. Cody Rodeheaver singled and doubled, and Pat Sines and Cory Helbig both singled twice.
Strietbeck went all nine innings, striking out five, to gain the win. Holtschneider also went the distance and took the loss, striking out four.
Grantsville will host Romney today at 4 p.m.
