Hampshire’s Whitacre no-hits Keyser

ROMNEY, W.Va. — Nathan Whitacre flirted with perfection, picked up a no-hitter instead and Hampshire couldn’t have asked for a better start to the season than a 12-0 win over Keyser Thursday afternoon in Romney.

Whitacre recorded just two strikeouts in the shortened outing, but allowed only two runners to reach. He hit one and walked the other.

At the plate, Ollie Douthitt led the Trojans with a triple, single and a run batted in. Brandon Belt hit a double, a single and drove in a run, and Whitacre added a double. Dylan Pepper and Caleb Pancione both hit two-run singles.

Bell and Jalen Newcome were credited with helping preserve the no-hitter with the defense on the left side of the infield.

The Trojans won the jayvee game 11-8.

Hampshire (2-0) plays Saturday at Washington, at 1 p.m. Keyser (0-1) hosts Northern on Tuesday.
