Post 13 wins first half of Mtn. District

Conley homers, Ellsworth pitches eight innings in win over Post 214

CUMBERLAND — Fort Cumberland Post 13 clinched the first half of the Mountain District by improving to 4-1 in district play with a 5-3 win over Grantsville Post 214 Thursday evening at Legion Field.

Jeff Conley hit a solo home run in the first inning and Cumberland got three runs home in the frame to open up scoring. Post 13 added a run in the second inning before Grantsville struck in the third.

Using a Jason Ashby two-run home run Grantsville was able to score three times in the third to pull within a run, and the score would stay there until Cumberland scored again in the eighth one one of Cody Ellsworth’s two singles.

Scott Rice had three hits for Post 13, a double and two singles, and drove in two runs.

For Grantsville, Dan Warnick singled twice, and Ashby added a single to his home run.

Ellsworth was winning pitcher, throwing eight innings and allowing five hits. Chandler Tomlinson pitched the ninth to earn the save.

Dylan Miller worked out of bases loaded jams in the second and third innings to help Post 13 strand a total of 14 runners. There was one out when he got out of trouble in the second, and no outs when the bases became full in the third.

Fort Cumberland improves to 8-4-1 overall and will play a doubleheader with Berkeley County at noon on Saturday, at Legion Field.
