Grantsville sweeps Wheeling

ELKINS, W.Va. — Jason Ashby drove in three runs in the first game and Nathan King brought home four in the second as Grantsville Post 214 swept Wheeling Post 1 Sunday during the Hillbilly Hardball Classic in American Legion baseball action at Davis & Elkins College.

Grantsville used nine hits to beat Wheeling 9-4 in the opening game and then smashed 12 hits to edge Wheeling 8-6 in the second game to finish the tournament 3-1.

In the first game, Ashby belted a two-run home run in the first inning and added an RBI single in the third. Andrew Sisler had two RBI base hits and Teddy Linton had a two-run single in the third. Trey Beasom added two singles.

King picked up the complete-game victory, giving up seven hits while striking out two and walking four. Of Wheeling’s four runs, only one was earned.

Corey Walters led Wheeling with two singles and R.J. Vargo had a two-run double in the three-run seventh inning. Jordan Medley had a double.

In the second game, King drove in two runs in the first, had an RBI base hit in the third and had a run-producing triple in the fifth. Dan Warnick and Ashby each had two base hits with Ashby driving in a run in the fourth. Linton and Matt Watson also had two singles with Linton getting an RBI.

Wheeling was led by Andrew Henry’s two singles and Medley had an RBI triple. Ben Kimpel had a two-run double.

Grantsville’s Dylan Miller took a perfect game into the fourth inning. In five innings of work, he gave up one earned run and struck out two. Derek Taylor struck out three in two innings of relief.

Grantsville (6-8) hosts Fort Cumberland Post 13 Tuesday evening at Garrett College beginning at 6 p.m.
