Beasom’s arm, bat lead Grantsville to Hardball win

BUCKHANNON, W.Va. — Trey Beasom homered and singled and got the final two outs for a save as Grantsville Post 214 beat Kanawha Valley Post 94, 10-8, in the opening round of the Hardball Hillbilly Classic Friday at West Virginia Wesleyan College.

Grantsville took advantage of several walks from Kanawha Valley pitchers to win despite being outhit 14-7.

Grantsville trailed 8-2 after 2 1/2 innings and came roaring back with a three run third and a four-run fourth. The game was shortened to six innings by the 2:15 time limit.

Grantsville drew two walks and had a hit batter in the three-run third, and received two walks in the fourth and fifth innings.

Beasom hit a solo homer in the fourth. Corey Helbig, Nathan King and Derek Taylor added RBI singles.

Jason Ashby got the win, pitching 5 1-3 innings, working his way out of several jams and stranding Kanawha Valley baserunners. Beasom came on in the sixth with two on and got a pair of pop ups to end the inning, and game.

Eric Frazier, a recent draft pick by the Kansas City Royals, went 3 for 4 with three singles for Kanawha Valley.

Grantsville (4-7) will play Bridgeport at 12:30 and Norchester, Pa., at 3:30 today at Davis & Elkins College.
