CHARLESTON, W.Va. — Trevor Sites drove in three runs as Moorefield beat Man 9-3 in the Class A championship game Saturday night.
Moorefield (24-6) earned its first state title since 2002.
Man (19-14) made its first championship game appearance and showed no signs of wear from a 10-inning win over Madonna in the semifinals Friday night.
The Hillbillies took a 3-2 lead into the bottom of the fourth before Moorefield went ahead to stay. The Yellow Jackets scored three times on only one hit with the benefit of three walks. Tucker Smith’s single scored two runs and Sites capped the rally with a sacrifice fly.
Moorefield added four runs in the sixth, highlighted by Shawn Hibbard’s two-run double.
Hibbard also pitched three-plus innings of relief.
Class AAA
Martinsburg 8, Logan 1
Brandon King threw a one-hitter and drove in a run as the Bulldogs beat Logan 8-1 in the semifinals Saturday at Charleston’s Appalachian Power Park.
King (8-2) struck out 10 and walked six. He got his 55th RBI of the season with a single in the third. Ryan Bennett hit an RBI double in a four-run fourth that made it 6-0.
Today, Martinsburg (27-9) makes its first championship game appearance since winning the title in 1995 when it takes on Nitro (31-4). Nitro, which defeated John Marshall 12-3 in Saturday’s other semifinal, beat Martinsburg 10-0 in five innings in a state semifinal last year.
Nitro 12, John Marshall 3
Defending champion Nitro’s talent and experience were too much for John Marshall in the Class AAA semifinals.
Nitro (31-4) used a six-run third inning to beat the Monarchs 12-3 Saturday at Charleston’s Appalachian Power Park.
Nitro’s J.R. Bradley (9-1) scattered six hits and had a triple and a double at the plate. Bradley and teammate Andrew Pickering drove in three runs apiece.
John Marshall (22-5) was making its first tournament appearance in seven years. The 12 runs allowed by the Monarchs were a season high.
Class AA
Lincoln 6, Point Pleasant 2
Kenneth Healey pitched a six-hitter, Josh Harlow drove in two runs during a fifth-inning rally and Lincoln beat Point Pleasant for the Class AA state title, its second in seven years.
Lincoln (19-11) was manhandled by eventual champion Logan in last year’s semifinals.
Point Pleasant starter Tyson Jones didn’t allow a hit until the fifth inning, when Lincoln scored six times with two outs.
Point Pleasant (20-11) lost in the championship game for the second straight season.
