Spartanburg Methodist wins, 12-1, advancing to its 4th NJCAA World Series

GARDEN CITY, N.Y. — The Spartanburg Methodist College Pioneers clinched the Eastern District title on Sunday with a 12-1 win over Potomac State and advance to the NJCAA Division I World Series in Grand Junction, Colo., this weekend.

The Pioneers (54-8) will face San Jacinto College at 7:30 p.m. on Sunday in its first appearance in the NJCAA Division I World Series since 2007. The Pioneers finished No. 3 in country in that Series.

The Pioneers were ranked No. 9 going into the Eastern Districts. SMC opened the tournament on Friday with an 8-3 win over Potomac State and defeated rival USC Sumter 12-1 on Saturday.

The Pioneers also defeated USC Sumter on May 10 to win its ninth Region X title.

This will be the Pioneers’ fourth World Series appearance under head coach Tim Wallace, who this season surpassed 800 wins at SMC.

The double-elimination series, held at Sam Suplizio Field, in Grand Junction, starts Saturday with the championship game being played on May 30.

At least four former series champions will be represented at the JUCO World Series, including Howard College (1991), Cowley County Community College (1997, 1998), Middle Georgia College (1995, 1982, 1980, 1979), and San Jacinto College (1990, 1989, 1987, 1986, 1985).
