Potomac State, FSU end spring trips with momentum

MYRTLE BEACH, S.C. — Moorefield graduate Brittany Wright drove in four runs, and Potomac State brought in 14 between the third and fourth inning in a 16-0 win over Massassoit (Mass.) in the Catamounts’ final day of their spring trip.

Wright used a double and a triple to collect her four RBIs, and catcher Kayla Watts, a Petersburg grad, had three RBIs with a double. Kayla Stickel finished with a double and a single, and Brittany Kolb hit two singles.

The Catamounts got one run in each of the first two innings to take a 2-0 lead, and turned on the heat with eight more runs in the third. Not content there, PSC added six more runs in the fourth to put the score at its final resting spot.

Former Bishop Walsh hurler Rochelle Wolford started and worked the first three innings without allowing a hit. Sheila Armel allowed the only hit of the day for Massassoit, but kept the shutout intact.

“We’re pleased to finish the trip on a strong note,” said Potomac State Head Coach Jim Walton. “The whole trip was a positive for our team. We got to learn alot about our team, and get to take some momentum into the rest of the regular season, and conference play.”

Now 5-5, the Cats went 5-3 on their trip. They play at Beaver County on Monday at 3 p.m.



Pitching, defense win one game, costly in another

MYRTLE BEACH, S.C. — Potomac State won its first game behind strong performances from its pitching staff and defense, but then had the same things fail them in a loss during the second game Thursday.

Stickel rang up eight strikeouts and walked only two batters in earning the 3-1 victory over Alfred State (N.Y.). She allowed six hits, but the only run was unearned.

At the plate, the Catamounts got a run-scoring triple from Wright and two singles from Watts.

Cindy Lober had two singles for Alfred.

Potomac State fell apart in the second inning of the second game where it allowed six unearned runs as it lost 8-4 to Northampton. Potomac State gave up eight unearned runs overall.

The Catamounts made a total of eight errors, but was outscored even though it outhit Northampton (Pa.) 10-8.

Stickel and Wright both went 4-for-4 in game two, with a double and three singles each. Stickel finished with three RBIs.

FSU finishes spring break

7-1 with a pair of victories





CLERMONT, Fla. — Frostburg State softball team picked up another pair of wins with a 12-7 victory over SUNY Morrisville and a 2-0 shutout of Babson to finish its spring break trip at the NTC Spring Games Thursday.

The Bobcats, which finished the week with a 7-1 record, are 9-3 overall and have won their last three contests.

FSU rallied from a 7-4 deficit against Morrisville with a six-run fifth inning for a 10-7 lead on its way to a 12-7 win in Thursday’s first game.

Junior starter Katelyn Coffey earned the win after pitching four innings. She also received help from the Bobcat offensive output in the top of the fifth. Freshman Megan Magee earned her first career save after tossing the final three innings and retiring all nine batters she faced.

Senior Jamye Miller and junior Samanth Quirin led the Bobcats hitting. Miller was 2-for-4 with a double, two runs scored and an RBI while Quirin was 1-for-2 with a three-run home run.

Freshman Brooke Speake was 2-for-5 with an inside the park home run and two RBIs while Jenna Delaney was 2-for-4 with a double and two RBIs.

Against Babson, the Bobcats earned their second shut out of their trip, 2-0. Magee tossed a complete-game three hitter with six strikeouts for her fourth-straight victory.

She received help from junior Lindsay Freitag who tripled and scored a run while sophomore Brooke Tapman doubled and had an RBI.

Frostburg State hosts Washington & Jefferson on Wednesday at 3 p.m.
