NORTH EAST — Tristan Beyer made his college baseball pitching debut a keeper as he kept the ball low and Cecil off-balance to help the Allegany College Trojans gain a doubleheader split with a 9-4 win in the second game Saturday afternoon at Cecil.
Cecil won the first game on a first-pitch lead-off homer in the bottom of the ninth inning by Will Flores.
As for Beyer in the second game, he scattered eight hits and limited any Cecil damage to a pair of two-run innings. He struck out just one, but was efficient with his pitches.
“Beyer in his first college start did an outstanding job,” said Allegany head coach Steve Bazarnic. “He gave us a big shot in the arm. Just outstanding. One strikeout, but a lot ground balls. We needed him today.”
The Trojans tied the score at 2-2 with a two-run fifth and then broke the game open with a five-run sixth and then a two-run seventh. Ethan Newton hit a double and two singles to knock in two runs for the Trojans, knocking them in in both the fifth and the sixth.
Cody Blickenstaff had a double, a single and an RBI, while John Shaffer had a pair of singles. A.J. Robinson had an RBI in the seventh and Brandon Schott sent an RBI single to center.
In the opener, Allegany fought back with one in the fourth, two in the fifth and three in the sixth to even a 6-0 deficit, but Cecil clinched it with Flores’ extra-inning homer.
For Allegany, Casey Clinton and Blickenstaff both had two hits and an RBI.
Andy Lytle went all nine innings, stuck out 10 and gave up just five hits. But the Trojans committed four errors behind him to give up four unearned runs.
“We got great pitching from Andy, and we came back to tie, only to lose in the ninth,” said Bazarnic. “So it was nice to rebound and win on the road.”
Allegany (7-3) will host Westmoreland today at 1 p.m.
