Culver Design rallies, beats The Wisp, 10-9
ROMNEY, W.Va. — Trailing 9-4 entering the bottom the sixth inning, Culver Design stormed back for three runs in the sixth and three more in the seventh to come away with a 10-9 victory over The Wisp Tuesday at Hampshire High School to take the opening game of their best-of-three Hot Stove League playoff series.
Having cut the deficit to 9-7 after the three-run sixth, reliever Josh Crawford entered the game in the top of the seventh to shut down The Wisp, striking out two.
In the bottom half of the inning, it was Crawford again coming to the rescue with a two-run single to tie the score at 9-9. Culver then loaded the bases and they remained loaded after the fielder’s choice, before a throwing error by The Wisp allowed the winning run to score from third.
Trevor Moore started the game for Culver and struck out eight batters through five innings of work. Offensively, Moore had two singles, while Chris Wilson had an RBI single. Garrett Crawford had two singles and three runs batted in, while Dane Heavener had two singles.
For the Wisp, Cody Humbertson and Josh Bittinger both doubled, and Josh Mason had two singles.
The second game of the series will be played today at the Hot Stove Complex.
Madigan’s Auto 3
Cork’s Cars 2
POTOMAC PARK — Scott Bittinger and Cody Sliger combined for a two-hitter, and Madigan’s Auto took a 2-0 lead in the first, then came back with one in the third to break a 2-2 tie and go head for good in defeating Cork’s Cars Tuesday in the opener of their second-round Hot Stove playoff series at Holler Field.
Shane Peck doubled, singled and knocked in a run for Madigan’s, while Josh Wotring tripled home a run, and Cody Sliger singled in a run. Brooks Waybright doubled.
For Cork’s, Myer and Stewart singled.
Bittinger went the first four innings for Madigan’s and struck out two, while Sliger came on in the fifth to finish, striking out two as well. Evan Rhodeheaver went the distance for Cork’s, giving up six hits and striking out three.
Game two of the best-of-three series will be Thursday at Hamilton.
Salisbury 5
Hobo’s Restaurant 2
POTOMAC PARK — Nathan Hutzel and Mike Miller combined for a three-hitter to lead Salisbury to a victory over Hobo’s Restaurant in the opening game of their second-round Hot Stove playoff series Tuesday at Hamilton Field.
Scott Beachy singled twice for Salisbury, while Cody Dice singled in a run. Aaron Broadwater singled in two runs in the three-run third.
For Hobo’s, Cory Shroyer doubled home a run and Luke Campbell singled in a run, both coming in the third inning.
Hutzel started and went the first three, with Miller coming on in the fourth. The two combined for 10 strikeouts, with Hutzel registering six.
The second game of the best-of-three series will be Thursday at Holler Field.
Cresaptown Eagles 10
Frostburg 1st United 0
CUMBERLAND — Kevin Myers threw a complete-game, six inning three-hitter and Ryan Keifer belted a three-run home run to power the Cresaptown Eagles over the Frostburg First United Tuesday evening at the Allegany College of Maryland.
The game was postponed by rain on Monday. The Eagles, up one in the best-of-three series in the second round of the playoffs, and First United meet again this evening at Holler Field beginning at 5:30 p.m.
Myers had eight strikeouts and allowed four walks in picking up the three-hit victory.
The Eagles pounded out 13 hits but didn’t score its first run until the four-run fourth inning. They ended the game with a five-run sixth inning highlighted by Keifer’s three-run homer.
Ryan Murphy led the Eagles with three base hits and an RBI while Chris Fram and Kyle Poissonnier each doubled and singled. Fram drove in four runs and Brandon Hammerle and Brandon Murray each had two singles. Myers also tripled.
